Description

The MC/CC Combined Course is designed to train and assess individuals undertaking Machine Controller (MC) and Crane Controller (CC) duties on Network Rail Infrastructure. This comprehensive course develops the knowledge, understanding, and practical skills needed to plan, control, and safely manage the use of On-Track Plant (OTP) and lifting operations.


By combining many disciplines into one structured course, delegates gain the full range of competencies required to coordinate OTP operations, ensure safe lifting practices, and demonstrate compliance with Network Rail standards. The course is particularly suited to those who need to prove competence in both roles and progress their career within rail operations and plant control.

 

Course Content & Modules

The course includes both theoretical learning and practical assessments over 6 days, with a combined GLH of 42 hours (17 hours allocated to practical delivery and testing as a minimum requirement)

It covers the following modules:

  • MC MH – (includes MC DPV and MCMM Auto Award)
  • MC 1
  • MC 4
  • Slinger
  • CC Exc
  • CC 3
  • CC 6

 

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the MC/CC Combined Course, delegates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate competence in both Machine Controller and Crane Controller roles.
  • Safely plan, brief, and control OTP and lifting operations on Network Rail infrastructure.
  • Apply relevant Railway Group Standards, company procedures, and site safety protocols.
  • Communicate effectively with machine operators, slingers, and site staff.
  • Manage risk, implement control measures, and ensure compliance throughout operations.

 

Pre-Requisites

  • OTP Core E-Learning (completed on the NWR eLearning system prior to attendance).
  • Minimum age: 18.
  • Meet the medical requirements of Network Rail Standard NR/L2/OHS/00124 (minimum medical level 2, no restrictions, normal colour vision) and NR/L2/OHS/0120 (Drugs & Alcohol).
  • Sufficient command of English as per NR/L2/CTM/021 (Competence & Training in Track Safety).
  • Must bring Sentinel smart card with valid PTS (not in Learning Support).
  • Appropriate PPE: High-visibility clothing (RIS-3279-TOM standard), hard hat, safety boots with full ankle and mid-sole protection, and gloves.
